DESCRIPTION:Get a behind the scenes look at Daniel Hauben’s creative process at a special screening of a time-lapse video showing the evolution of Emergence\, in which 6 years of painting goes by in less than 20 minutes.  After the video there will be a gallery talk by the artist\, followed by a reception. \nEmergence\, the the 9-foot centerpiece of the exhibition\, was born during Covid-19 when Hauben was painting exclusively in his studio.  The artist describes it as a “6-year odyssey into the realm of my imagination\,” and it is a distinct departure from the cityscapes he has become known for in his long artistic career. \nThe gallery opens at 11 AM and the time lapse will be shown at 1:00 PM. \nDaniel Hauben was born and raised in the Bronx\, and is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts. He has had over thirty national and international solo exhibitions\, including at the Bronx Museum and the American Embassy in Berlin. His MTA Arts for Transit commission The EL was acknowledged in 2008 by Americans for the Arts as one of forty notable works of public art nationwide. In 2012 Hauben completed a commission of 22 paintings for the Bronx Community College Library\, the largest public art commission in the Bronx in 70 years. His lifelong artistic focus has been the urban landscape\, the natural landscape and\, more recently\, the landscape of his imagination. SUMMARY:Washington and the King's Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation by Gerry Bogacz\, of the Kingsbridge Historical Society\, about Washington’s narrow escape over the King’s Bridge in 1776–giving the Continental Army the opportunity to continue the fight in the years that followed.  The presentation will be held at 6:00 on June 10th at the Will Library in Yonkers at 1500 Central Park Avenue.  On-site parking is plentiful. \nKen Burns’ remarkable documentary on the American Revolution has dropped in time for the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the military events of 1776 in Brooklyn\, Manhattan and points north. The episodes which captured the actions of George Washington and the Continental Army in 1776 were not able to relate the full history of Washington’s evacuation of Manhattan Island. Rather\, the narrative moves from the skirmish in Harlem Heights directly to the Battle of White Plains\, reducing the actual evacuation to a footnote\, regardless of the near demise of the Continental Army as it departed Manhattan. \nThe presentation will explore the details of Washington’s departure from Manhattan and the near destruction of the Continental Army as it moves north over the King’s Bridge from Manhattan to the mainland in the current northwest Bronx. It includes the critical roles of two militia units in obstructing British General Howe as his force attempts to encircle the departing Americans. The second of these militias\, under Colonel John Glover\, included free Black and indigenous soldiers fighting among their white counterparts.  The presentation will be held at the Will Library in Yonkers at 1500 Central Park Avenue. \nIf not for these militias\, the American forces certainly could have been encircled and destroyed\, which would have ended the Revolutionary enterprise. \nThe Kingsbridge Historical Society’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a festive Father’s Day fundraiser amidst our current exhibition of paintings by celebrated Bronx artist\, Daniel Hauben.  We will have items for purchase\, a raffle and a silent auction to benefit the Kingsbridge Historical Society as we raise funds to implement accessibility improvements at Edgehill\, our landmark headquarters. \nIn addition to original paintings of every size\, Daniel Hauben will have affordable museum-quality prints\, limited edition etchings and silk screen prints available for purchase. Retail vendor From The Bronx will provide a variety of Bronx-themed merchandise and apparel for sale.  We are featuring live music by Anthony Ramirez and refreshments will be served.  A percentage of all proceeds from the day will benefit KHS. \nNew Painting “Edgehill” to be Auctioned\nLast month\, KHS exhibiting artist Daniel Hauben created a unique\, collaborative painting with his friend\, the Austrian painter Alexander Arthur Dietz. The two artists worked on location in front of the historic Edgehill Church. Passersby stopped to watch the “performance” as the artists worked in tandem to capture the edifice of the 100+ year old landmarked building in a blend of their two distinct artistic styles. “It’s rare for artists to work together like this\,” said Hauben\, “but we’ve cultivated a very special collaborative relationship over many years. Axxl’s work is more expressionistic and he doesn’t hesitate to venture into abstraction\, whereas my own work tends to be more contained. In working together\, we push each other in new directions.” \nThis uniquely expressive work\, which measures 50 x 49 inches\, is a joyful rendering of Edgehill and a perfect example of artistic collaboration. It will be auctioned during the fundraiser\, and 50% of the proceeds will benefit the Kingsbridge Historical Society. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:On September 10\, award-winning author Robert K. Fitts of Riverdale will talk about baseball in Japan and his new book In the Japanese Ballpark. After providing an overview designed to acquaint new fans with Japanese baseball\, Fitts will give a behind-the-scenes look at what makes Japanese baseball unique—and so much fun. He will talk about the differences between American and Japanese baseball both on the diamond and in the stands.  Come hear about life as a player in Japan\, cheering groups\, fuzzy mascots\, and beer girls. \nA book signing will follow the talk. \nAbout the Author: \nRobert Fitts has published eleven books and numerous articles on the history of baseball in Japan and Japanese baseball cards. He received his Ph.d. in historical archaeology from Brown University and ran excavations in New York City before turning to baseball history. He is the founder and chair of the Society of American Baseball Research’s Asian Baseball Committee and recently received the society’s Chadwick Award for lifetime contributions to baseball history. DESCRIPTION:Register here.\nHike Van Cortlandt Park & learn how Bronx locals endured 8 of the most violent\, dramatic years in the borough’s history. \n\n\n\n\nVan Cortlandt Park was a warzone . . . literally. During the American Revolution\, the land that would become the park was caught between enemy lines as were the people that lived there. This walking tour and hike of the area in and around Van Cortlandt Park tells the story of the soldiers\, generals\, and battles but also the story of how local residents got through the most violent and dramatic 8 years in the history of The Bronx. \nThe first half of the tour is walk through the Van Cortlandt House Museum and surrounding park (about 1 mile). The second half is for anyone interested in continuing on a true hike: we will explore the area around the park to visit little-known places that played in a role in the Revolution (an additional 1.5 miles).The tour begins at the flag pole in front of Van Cortlandt House Museum. The first half ends at the Van Cortlandt family burial vault. You can decide from there if you would like to continue on the hike. \nThe tour will be led by Nick Dembowski (Kingsbridge Historical Society President) and Margaret Holmes (Van Cortlandt House Museum Director). \nAdmission is FREE. DESCRIPTION:Link to register: bronxhistory.org/symposium \nThis symposium at SUNY Maritime College on October 4th\, will explore the important Revolutionary War Battle of Pell’s Point/Pelham that happened on October 18\, 1776.  It is widely considered to be the most important battle to occur in The Bronx during the American Revolution. \nThe symposium will feature historians Friederike Baer\, Nick Dembowski of the Kingsbridge Historical Society\, and Professor Lloyd Ultan\, with a Q&A moderated by Steven Payne of Bronx County Historical Society and David Allen\, SUNY Maritime Humanities Department. Participants will also have an opportunity to explore the grounds of SUNY Maritime College\, including historic Fort Schuyler\, and view the New York State Parks travelling exhibit\, “Revisit the Revolution.” Visitors will also enjoy the amazing view of New York City from the base of the Throg’s Neck Bridge. SUMMARY:Washington and the King's Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Ken Burns’ remarkable documentary on the American Revolution has dropped in time for the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the military events of 1776 in Brooklyn\, Manhattan and points north. The episodes which captured the actions of George Washington and the Continental Army in 1776 were not able to relate the full history of Washington’s evacuation of Manhattan Island. Rather\, the narrative moves from the skirmish in Harlem Heights directly to the Battle of White Plains\, reducing the actual evacuation to a footnote\, regardless of the near demise of the Continental Army as it departed Manhattan. \nThis presentation at the Riverdale Neighborhood House by Kingsbridge Historical Society member Gerry Bogacz explores the details of Washington’s departure from Manhattan and the near destruction of the Continental Army as it moves north over the King’s Bridge from Manhattan to the mainland in the current northwest Bronx. It includes the critical roles of two Continental Army units in obstructing British General Howe as his force attempts to encircle the departing Americans. The second of these units\, under Colonel John Glover\, included free Black and indigenous soldiers fighting among their white counterparts. \nIf not for these units\, the American forces certainly could have been encircled and destroyed\, which would have ended the Revolutionary enterprise. \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development in partnership with the City Council. SUMMARY:From Doo Wop to Hip Hop to Reggaeton
DESCRIPTION:For the last 100 years\, people of African descent have played an integral part in the development of Bronx communities and have played an important role in every important musical innovation coming out of the borough.  Beginning with the settlement of Morrisania and Hunts Point by hundreds  of thousands of Black people from the American South and the Anglophone Caribbean in the 1930’s and 1940’s\, which also shaped the demographic component of virtually ever public housing development built in the Bronx in the 1950’s and 1960’s\, the Black population of the Bronx has undergone a dramatic transformation in the late 30 years\, with the majority of new residents coming from West Africa as well as the West Indies\, and with many Black people of Southern origin returning home.  The geographic location of Black neighborhoods has also changed dramatically\, with the majority of Black residents in the Bronx now living in the North Bronx neighborhoods of Wakefield\, Baychester and Co-Op City  But one thing that hasn’t change is the Black contribution to the musical creativity of a place which has spawned more variety of popular music than any urban center in the world.  From the jazz\, latin music\, and doo wop created in Bronx neighborhoods from the 1940’s through the 1960’s\, through funk and salsa poular in the bronx from the mid 60’s through the mid 70’s\, to the hip hop and R and B which emerged in the 1970’s and is still vital\, to the  bachata\, dembo\, reggatone and afrobeat being produced today\, Bronx artists of African descent\, coming from many different countries\, have been in the forefront of the Bronx continuing musical creativity. Just think of the names\, from Thelonious Monk\, Elmo Hope and Arsenio Rodriguez\,  to the Chantels and the Chords\, to Luther Vandross\, Grandmaster Flash\, Cardi B\, Ice Spice\, Romeo Santos\, and Samara Joy\,   What a legacy to leave for future generations! \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development in partnership with the City Council.
