SUMMARY:Fluid Loyalties: A Fordham Farmboy Navigates the Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Bronx Beer Hall for a free lecture by Dr. J Keith Doherty of Philipse Manor Hall about Andrew Corsa and his experiences during the American Revolution.  Corsa was part of a prominent family in Fordham Village and remembered as an American patriot and one of Washington’s “Westchester Guides” during the Revolution.  But Corsa had a complicated history of shifting allegiance during the war.  Dr. Doherty will unpack this history and speak more generally about the complex nature of the Revolution. \nThis event is part of Bronx County Historical Society’s “America 250: The Bronx” yearlong programming and co-sponsored by the Kingsbridge Historical Society and Van Cortlandt House Museum. \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development in partnership with the City Council. \nThe Kingsbridge Historical Society and VCHM’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

SUMMARY:“The Fight for Freedom:” Black experiences of the American Revolution in The Bronx
DESCRIPTION:DUE TO THE WEATHER\, THIS EVENT IS HAPPENING OVER ZOOM ONLY.  THERE WILL BE NO IN-PERSON GATHERING FOR THIS EVENT. \nRegister for event here. \nFor British colonists\, Liberty and Freedom were motivating principals that sparked the Revolution.  While people of African descent were highly motivated by these ideals\, their road to realizing them was uniquely challenging.  As a people who were mostly enslaved\, attaining basic human rights was a more urgent concern than taxes on tea and the jurisdiction of the British Parliament.  But the chaos and violence that gripped this area created opportunities for brave and desperate Black men and women to claim their freedom–as soldiers\, as deserters\, and as spies. \nJoin local historian Nick Dembowski for a presentation that delves into historical documents revealing how Black people experienced the Revolution in today’s Bronx.  This includes new research about local figures and landmarks such as the little-known “Negro Fort.” \nThis free presentation will take place live-streamed over Zoom on Thursday February 26th at 7:00 PM.  This is a joint presentation of Van Cortlandt House Museum\, the Kingsbridge Historical Society\, and Bronx County Historical Society.  To get the Zoom link register for the event on Eventbrite here. \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. \nThe Kingsbridge Historical Society and VCHM’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

During the American Revolution\, the land that would become the park was caught between enemy lines as were the people that lived there. This walking tour and hike of the area in and around Van Cortlandt Park tells the story of the soldiers\, generals\, and battles but also the story of how local residents got through the most violent and dramatic 8 years in the history of The Bronx. \nThe first half of the tour is walk through the Van Cortlandt House Museum and surrounding park (about 1 mile). The second half is for anyone interested in continuing on a true hike: we will explore the area around the park to visit little-known places that played in a role in the Revolution (an additional 1.5 miles).The tour begins at the flag pole in front of Van Cortlandt House Museum. The first half ends at the Van Cortlandt family burial vault. You can decide from there if you would like to continue on the hike. \nThe tour will be led by Nick Dembowski (Kingsbridge Historical Society President) and Margaret Holmes (Van Cortlandt House Museum Director). \nAdmission is FREE. Registration is required.
