SUMMARY:Local Author Book Talk: Behind the Scenes of Japanese Baseball with Rob Fitts
DESCRIPTION:On September 10\, award-winning author Robert K. Fitts of Riverdale will talk about baseball in Japan and his new book In the Japanese Ballpark. After providing an overview designed to acquaint new fans with Japanese baseball\, Fitts will give a behind-the-scenes look at what makes Japanese baseball unique—and so much fun. He will talk about the differences between American and Japanese baseball both on the diamond and in the stands.  Come hear about life as a player in Japan\, cheering groups\, fuzzy mascots\, and beer girls. \nA book signing will follow the talk. \nAbout the Author: \nRobert Fitts has published eleven books and numerous articles on the history of baseball in Japan and Japanese baseball cards. He received his Ph.d. in historical archaeology from Brown University and ran excavations in New York City before turning to baseball history. He is the founder and chair of the Society of American Baseball Research’s Asian Baseball Committee and recently received the society’s Chadwick Award for lifetime contributions to baseball history. He was recently a curatorial consultant for the Yakyu-Baseball exhibit at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development in partnership with the City Council. SUMMARY:Battle of Pell's Point/Pelham Reenactment at Orchard Beach!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Orchard Beach in Pelham Bay Park to commemorate the most important battle in The Bronx during the American Revolution on its 250th anniversary.  This won’t happen again for another 50 years! \nThe event starts with a bang at 10:00 AM\, when the tall ship Lynx fires its cannon in the waters off of Orchard Beach.  Then the whaleboat Albatross will bring British sailors to a dramatic landing on the sand.  Reenactors will represent the invading Crown forces as they confront the Patriot resistance from Colonel John Glover and his famous Marblehead Mariners\, and other regiments all in historic uniforms.  Spectators will experience the landing and a fully narrated reenactment of the Battle of Pell’s Point/Pelham\, hear fife & drums\, watch military drills and maneuvers and hear from George Washington\, British General Howe\, Colonel Glover\, and a Marblehead Mariner.  Get there early to see the maneuvers! \nPlenty of Free parking available in the Orchard Beach parking lot. \nLead organizers: \n\nRevolutionary Westchester 250\nBronx County Historical Society\nKingsbridge Historical Society\nSUNY Maritime College\nSt. Paul’s Church National Historic Site\nFrom The Bronx\nThe Town of Pelham\n\nMore about the battle of Pell’s Point: \nOn October 18\, 1776\, approximately 750 Patriot soldiers under Colonel John Glover – including the 14th Continental Regiment\, also known as the Marblehead Mariners\, and three other Massachusetts regiments — executed a brilliant tactical engagement that delayed and resisted a much larger British force under General William Howe. Howe’s troops had landed on the Pell’s Point peninsula hoping to disrupt American supply lines and possibly block the northward escape of General George Washington’s Continental Army from northern Manhattan\, where it was facing the balance of the British forces.  This little acknowledged but pivotal battle delayed the British and helped Washington’s forces to successfully evacuate Manhattan in 1776 and survive to continue the fight for independence.  The following events will acknowledge the anniversary of the most consequential Revolutionary War battle within the boundaries of the modern Bronx. \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development in partnership with the City Council. \nThe Kingsbridge Historical Society’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \n

SUMMARY:From Doo Wop to Hip Hop to Reggaeton
DESCRIPTION:For the last 100 years\, people of African descent have played an integral part in the development of Bronx communities and have played an important role in every important musical innovation coming out of the borough.  Beginning with the settlement of Morrisania and Hunts Point by hundreds  of thousands of Black people from the American South and the Anglophone Caribbean in the 1930’s and 1940’s\, which also shaped the demographic component of virtually ever public housing development built in the Bronx in the 1950’s and 1960’s\, the Black population of the Bronx has undergone a dramatic transformation in the late 30 years\, with the majority of new residents coming from West Africa as well as the West Indies\, and with many Black people of Southern origin returning home.  The geographic location of Black neighborhoods has also changed dramatically\, with the majority of Black residents in the Bronx now living in the North Bronx neighborhoods of Wakefield\, Baychester and Co-Op City  But one thing that hasn’t change is the Black contribution to the musical creativity of a place which has spawned more variety of popular music than any urban center in the world.  From the jazz\, latin music\, and doo wop created in Bronx neighborhoods from the 1940’s through the 1960’s\, through funk and salsa poular in the bronx from the mid 60’s through the mid 70’s\, to the hip hop and R and B which emerged in the 1970’s and is still vital\, to the  bachata\, dembo\, reggatone and afrobeat being produced today\, Bronx artists of African descent\, coming from many different countries\, have been in the forefront of the Bronx continuing musical creativity. Just think of the names\, from Thelonious Monk\, Elmo Hope and Arsenio Rodriguez\,  to the Chantels and the Chords\, to Luther Vandross\, Grandmaster Flash\, Cardi B\, Ice Spice\, Romeo Santos\, and Samara Joy\,   What a legacy to leave for future generations! \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development in partnership with the City Council.
