SUMMARY:Black Landowners of The Bronx in the early 1800s (registration required)
DESCRIPTION:This talk by historian Keith Doherty will focus on a number of early farms and other properties in The Bronx that were owned by free Black men during the era of Gradual Emancipation\, when slavery was slowly being abolished in New York (1799-1827).  Though several Black-owned farms existed in the rural environs of the city at the time\, nearly all have been forgotten by history.  This talk is an attempt to shed light on a long-buried chapter in our local history when Black men–many of whom had been enslaved in their youth–rose to become successful businessmen. \nThe presentation with take place at RSS (2600 Netherland Ave) on Tuesday February 11th at 4:30 PM.  Join us in person or on Zoom (link will be sent to you after you register).  Register here: https://bit.ly/blackownedfarmsinthe1800s \nThe Kingsbridge Historical Society’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

SUMMARY:Kingsbridge and Spuyten Duyvil in the 1950s (at RSS Center for Ageless Living)
DESCRIPTION:We found a mysterious object deep in the archives of the Kingsbridge Historical Society–an old-looking unlabeled canister of 8mm film.  We were excited to see that the film depicted events in Kingsbridge in the early 1950s in color!  These events were clearly important to local people at the time but it was unclear to us what was going on in the scenes.  Only by referencing back issues of the Riverdale Press could we figure out what was happening.  Join us at the RSS Center for Ageless Living for a special viewing of rare footage of Kingsbridge and Spuyten Duyvil in the 1950s.  Kingsbridge Historical Society president\, Nick Dembowski\, will use the 1950s Riverdale Press to explain the scenes and explore the mindset of a tightly-knit community\, which was uneasy about developments\, both at home and abroad. \nPlease note that this event will be held at RSS (the RSS Center for Ageless Living) at 2600 Netherland Avenue beginning at 5:00 PM on Wednesday\, October 9th.

SUMMARY:The History of Spuyten Duyvil presented by Nick Dembowski
DESCRIPTION:Spuyten Duyvil’s history is really a microcosm of American history. Kingsbridge Historical Society President\, Nick Dembowski\, will trace its remarkable past from its Indigenous history\, through the Revolution\, to the Industrial era and beyond. The presentation will feature rarely seen maps and images to illustrate the story of a neighborhood\, which some still remember as an area with large estates and few apartment buildings. \nPlease join us in the Riverdale Senior Services Center for light refreshments\, the presentation and a Q&A with Nick. \n\nRegister here.
