Events Commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the
Battle of Pell’s Point/Pelham
On October 18, 1776, an outnumbered force of just 750 Patriots faced thousands of British soldiers in what is now Pelham Bay Park in The Bronx. Colonel John Glover’s brilliant battlefield tactics and the brave actions of his men held off multiple British advances. This little acknowledged but significant battle gave George Washington time to safely reposition his army and continue the fight for independence. Join us in commemorating this pivotal moment, when the Revolutionary War came to The Bronx!

SYMPOSIUM
Revolutionary Resistance at Pelham Bay

The symposium will feature historians Friederike Baer, Nick Dembowski of the Kingsbridge Historical Society, and Professor Lloyd Ultan, with a Q&A moderated by Steven Payne of Bronx County Historical Society and David Allen, SUNY Maritime Humanities Department. Participants will also have an opportunity to explore the grounds of SUNY Maritime College, including historic Fort Schuyler, and view the New York State Parks travelling exhibit, “Revisit the Revolution.” Visitors will also enjoy the amazing view of New York City from the base of the Throgg’s Neck Bridge. St. Paul's Church
National Historic Site

This 18th-century church was used as a hospital following the important Revolutionary War Battle at Pell’s Point in 1776 and was the scene of various military developments for the next six years. On October 16th, historic St. Paul’s Church will come alive with an outstanding performance of 18th century music inside the church. Then, beginning at about 8 pm, participants may pick up a candle-lit lantern for a guided tour of the cemetery, one of our nation’s oldest burial yards. As guests visit the graves, they’ll hear the tales of soldiers and townsfolk who lived through the epic story of the American Revolution. Free admission, free parking; light refreshments will be served. This is an event for all ages.
REENACTMENT

The event starts with a bang at 10:00 AM, when the tall ship Lynx fires its cannon in the waters off of Orchard Beach. Then the whaleboat Albatross will bring British sailors to a dramatic landing on the sand. Reenactors will represent the invading Crown forces as they confront the Patriot resistance from Colonel John Glover and his famous Marblehead Mariners, and other regiments all in historic uniforms. Spectators will experience the landing and a fully narrated reenactment of the Battle of Pell’s Point/Pelham, hear fife & drums, watch military drills and maneuvers and hear from George Washington, British General Howe, Colonel Glover, and a Marblehead Mariner. Get there early to see the maneuvers! Plenty of Free parking available.
