Just a guess but I think this on Broadway where the future Kingsbridge Post Office looks like it’s just started to be built. Those houses look like they’re on Godwin Terrace. I’m probably wrong but you never know!!!
Having been born after the trolleys were gone in NYC, the number of this particular trolley brought back memories of the bus route that replaced it: the #24 bus. When we went to Orchard Beach, we always tried to get the #24 bus on Bailey Ave and Kingsbridge Rd to Fordham Road and catch the #12 bus, you usually got a seat then. Otherwise we had to take the #20 to the #12 when there’s less chance of a seat. The same thing done going home. Only problem was, it didn’t run often. I remember there was only one bus driver, his name was Joe. He reminded me of the Jackie Gleason character in the Honeymooners only he was nicer. Love those memories.
It rolled off the table
And onto the floor
Then my poor meatball
It rolled out of the door.
It rolled into the garden
And under a bush
Then my poor meatball
Was nothing but mush.
I think that’s the rest of that song. Apologies for those who don’t like the song.

Hello Thomas. Sorry to tell you this but this item was in an email I received from eBay yesterday. I bought it right away as the option to “Buy it Now” was there. When items that I want are for bidding, I never win. There’s always someone with one or two minutes left and they win. So I was determined not to lose this time. Sorry. Haven’t gotten it yet but I’m sure it’ll be here soon.
I would agree with you on your assessment. It makes sense that that bridge crossed Tibbetts Brook. I believe the brook ran just east of what is now Riverdale Ave. The building in the painting could very well be the one above. Most old buildings don’t survive exactly as they were built (although I’m sure we’d find a lot that do). This building does reflect Dutch architecture so I think you’re right. Love the painting, are there any reproductions made and can you buy one??
I have this plate. Unfortunately it is still in the packed boxes from our last move ten years. Bought it from eBay a while ago, never remembered what it said on the backside. Got it b/c it had info about Kingsbridge. Now I know.
I think they gave out free toasters or something. By the dresses I’d say the 1930’s/1940’s and I think it was the opening of this branch. The first branch was on Third Ave I think.
I used to shop all the time for records at Progressive on Broadway. If you bought 10 singles, you got one free. It was a club. Great people worked. My first album was the Monkees premiere one. My gran bought her first color TV there, she got to pay for it monthly. Lucky for her. It was so long ago, good memories.
231st Street from Albany Crescent to Tibbetts Ave was filled in with the land/dirt from what is now the Jerome Reservoir.
