Greetings all! The team cataloguing photos in the KHS collection needs your help! The attached photo is of an unidentified residence from the early 1900s. The notes on the photo indicate that it was contributed to KHS by Vincent McCaffery in August 1958. The photographer is indicated as “M. Misell”. Internet searches have not yielded any useful information on either of these people.
Please provide any helpful information in the comments and thanks in advance!

Just curious …. post what is on the back if there is some handwriting or print.
At least it looks like a house along a ridge with the Hudson in the background, however, not well kept up.

I wonder if Vincent may have been related to Francis McCaffrey (1917-1989). Among other responsibilities, Francis evidently served as the Commissioner of Records for the Bronx Surrogate’s Court “until” 1961.

There was a NYC photographer named Mortimer Misell (1883-1943) in that time period. Haven’t found much on him though.

I do not think that the Vincent McCaffery in 1958 was related to Francis McCaffrey (1917-1989). Francis McCaffrey lived on University Ave and later an apartment at 4445 Post Road 1n 1950, until he died in 1989. His wife Irene died March 15th in 2000 leaving sons Francis Jr. of Floral Park and David of the Bronx. Irene did have a brother named Vincent O’Hara. It does not appear that this family ever had a large house in Riverdale. There also does not appear that a Vincent McCaffrey was in this family around 1958. We need to more about the person “Vincent” that donated the image. What address did he give, if any details etc. I did find a Photographer, H “Henry” Mortimer Misell born July 15th 1883 – March 6 1943 and married to Fannie, born 1883 through 1940 no children living various places in Manhattan.

McCAFFREY-Irene B. March 15. Wife of the late Francis J., former State Senator of New York. She is survived by her brothers James O’Hara, Richard O’Hara and Vincent O’Hara; four children, Francis Jr., Joan Patton, David and Susan; and four grandsons, Francis, Joseph, Luke and David. Upon graduation from Cathedral High Shool on Park Avenue in 1939, she worked for the BBC and the War Relief Fund. She received her BS from Fordham University in 1944 and her law degree from Fordham University School of Law in 1948. She was one of three women in a class of 110. She later received her BA in History and Literature, graduating Magna Cum Laude from the College of Mount St. Vincent, and in 1997 she studied at Oxford University. Irene worked for the Youth Service Agency for the City of New York under Mayors Wagner, Lindsay and Beame, and as Deputy General Counsel for the Human Resources Administration for the City of New York during the Koch administration. Memorial donations for cancer research may be made payable to Columbia University, C/O Dr. Gregory Mears, Room 932, Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, 161 Fort Washington Ave., New York, NY 10032.

Great research! I looked at some Sanborn maps from the turn of the 20th century, but didn’t discover any parcels with that family name (or a close variation). To be fair, they didn’t usually show owners’ names on smaller plots, and the photo seems to be a bit later, in any case.
One odd thought: there used to be many large Victorian houses along the Harlem River, before many of the 20th century apartments were built. So perhaps this was not quite in Riverdale? The area around the old NYU campus still has some remnants of that era, as does High Bridge. Pure speculation!

Theo…good idea about the NYU area, but 2170 University ave ( 1940 )
is a Dutch Colonial not a three over three Mansard roof line, unless radically changed.
