I wanted to alert the members to a unique online event occurring tomorrow:
A Pinkster celebration that will be live-streamed from the Van Cortlandt House Museum and is presented in partnership with the New York Historical Society and the Van Cortlandt Park Alliance. Click here to learn more and register. It will feature “Chief Baba and musicians (including a fiddler, drummer, and banjo–or banjar–player) and our very own Pinkster King!” You will need to attend virtually as in-person attendance is not permitted.
Pinkster was a holiday brought to our area by the Dutch colonists (it was their Pentecost holiday). It was celebrated by colonists and enslaved Africans, who “used the festival as a way to reconnect with family and resist the erasure of their West African cultures.”
