I wonder how much information we can uncover about these Patriots from deeds, books, genealogical sources, newspapers and Google. I am particularly interested in Robert Brown .
Your welcome, Corporation formed in 1953,,,,many issues later.
John McNamara in his book – History in Asphalt: The origin of Bronx Street and Place Names state that a longtime Kingsbridge family named Knowles disclaim any former ownership of property but point out there was an estate “Cedar Knolls ” W. 246th – 253rd was owned by the Hiram Barney family in 1856 . It appears the name is just descriptive.
These are a real time portal into the past . PROBABLY around 1880
Yes……Please ask the 30 landmark voters why they do not agree with you. Please advise the owner what you recommend they do with their property. I just do not understand your point for this issue that has been decided already.
Yes I agree this is one of many nice old houses in the Bronx. However, based on the facts articulated in the report linked too by bstein, this property does not meet the standards for landmarking. If however the area becomes a historical district, like Fieldstone, then restrictions can be put into place that limit knockdowns or total renovations.
My understanding was that there was no specific connection to any event or significant person or architect. There were numerous renovations, and just because it is a old house, is not enough to quify for landmark
Some years ago I bid on a postcard on Ebay of a building that was identified as from the Bronx. The postcard read – “Shillsburo, Kingsbridge NY” . The bottom of the postcard was very fuzzy and could not be read. I used Google Street view and its Ariel view to scan the Bronx, specifically Kingsbridge, and after a few hours found the old house hidden behind a forest of trees. I was outbid for that postcard that went for over $100 dollars. But now, with new software I was able to enhance the postcard and read the address written on the card 2447 Kingsbridge Terrace.
It was sent by Mrs. Max Budweiser where she says ” I live here ”
A Bronx based movie I have seen a few times – ” The Wanderers “, 1979 with Ken Whal & Karen Allen. It had a couple of scenes in front of the building. I remembered the spooky front door and always thought I could ID the building…no luck. There also is a screen shot of the full building, but it must have few by.
Today my wife asked me if I ever heard of the Castle in Kingsbridge ? Sharon said the New York Post had a story that the castle just sold for 1.6 Million. Could it be the mystery building that I called a castle?
Sure enough it was and Sharon started looking for real estate web pages to view the over 28 rooms in the 5 story, plus basement building. With those leads in hand, it did not take long to finds links to research and tours.

However,. The spacing of the gaps on the tops of the Fonthill Castle at My St. Vincent are narrow and do not match the Tower in the Photo . It may be located in the Bronx or Westchester countyI know that the Biograph Film Studio was located in Tremont section of the Bronx. They also filmed Car 54 Where you there. The Edison Studio at 2628 Decatur Ave & Oliver Place in the Bedford Park section of the Bronx. This is the area where the first Frankenstein movie was made.
