Fort #1 plaque – I should have documented where I got this from.

So I took Sharon to Stella D’Orio’s in 1972. One of our early first dates, because I wanted to impress her. Guess it was the right choice, 50 years later we are happy together. I do remember I was a little pricey, much more than the special
Clearly the photo 4 Building with 2 windows, matches with the Building in the Book with Engine 1234
One other theory is that he died of natural causes and therefore it was not news worthy and not reported. It is apparent that his wife did not keep a diary or letters .
Very interesting find. I maybe wrong, but I believe that it was generally stated thāt Van DER Donck died at sea. This document makes it clear that it was during an attack.

However, I have seen this image of Tiebout & 183rd St. from the Lehigh University files some years ago and I thought it was interesting.

November 21, 2021 at 2:43 pm in reply to: Patriot Army’s Retreat through The Bronx, October 1776 #2339It is good to compare the 1777 map and the 1887 maps together.
The 1777 map has the Bronx River to far west, along with the Hutchinson Rive
The Old Boston Post Road, along with the Miles Square Road, is too far South.
November 20, 2021 at 11:58 am in reply to: Patriot Army’s Retreat through The Bronx, October 1776 #2336Nick, As I mentioned the other night – the OLD Boston Post road up the hill ( Heath Ave) from The Kingsbridge was steep and after passing Ft Independence heads a little Southeast & downhill to the Bronx river. Going along Bailey Ave from Heath to “Mosholu” and /or Up Broadway to the Van Cortlandt Mansion and meeting up with “Mosholu Cut Through” aka Miles Square Road that meets the Fordham Ridge at Jerome Ave and 233rd St. Basically…. At VC Mansion, taking the Major Deegan to 233rd and Van Cortlandt Ave East ( AKA Miles Square Road) North onto Kimball Ave east of the Yonkers reservoir. This way GW stays on the high ground above the Bronx River vs Webster Ave and Bronx River Road ( Yonkers ) along the Bronx River.

Glad you found this movie that mentioned the Spuyten Duyvil Station. Historical and very entertaining.
These maps show the only group of houses that match the three under the el, just South of W.236th St. In 1915

Those houses were under the El on the Westside of Broadway. It had to be South of W242nd and North of W23oth.
The El breaks away from Broadway just after W218th and few old houses north to W230th
Too Bad the camera was not rolling in 1783
on November 16, 1783, General George Washington and Governor of New York George Clinton reclaimed Fort Washington on the northwest corner of Manhattan Island and then led the Continental Army in a triumphal procession march down the road through the center of the island onto Broadway in the Town to the Battery.[25] The evening of Evacuation Day, Clinton hosted a public dinner at Fraunces Tavern, which Washington attended. It concluded with thirteen toasts, according to a contemporary account in Rivington’s Gazette,
The west Side Lawn club is shown on the map previously sent.
The Large image of the Tennis Club is clearly near the end stop of the train station at W. 242nd street.
The Photo may have come from a parks dept annual
